WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates provides a gentle yet extremely effective approach to obtaining optimal strength, flexibility and endurance. Movements are performed slowly and within each individual’s range of motion, resulting in a safe and effective way of exercising. Top athletes wishing to improve performance and minimize risk of injury, those who have never exercised, and those recovering from injury, can benefit from a personalized workout. Pilates focuses on core stability, strength and flexibility, incorporating exercises that strengthen and stretch muscles uniformly. The development of deep core muscles helps to maintain the spine in its optimal position when performing all movements from basic daily activities to competitive sports such as golf, tennis, skiing, baseball and dancing.
HISTORY OF PILATES
German born, Joseph Pilates, was a sickly child. Determined to overcome his frailties, he developed an exercise philosophy that combined strength, stamina and flexibility. Because his exercise philosophy requires focused interaction between the mind and body, a new awareness of muscle function and control develops. Interned in England during WW I, he taught fellow camp prisoners exercises he designed using the springs from their beds. After the war, on his way to America, he met his wife Clara, a nurse. Together they opened a studio in New York City to rehabilitate injured athletes and to improve dancer’s performance. He practiced “contrology” (later known as Pilates) until his death at age 87.
